Sacred PlacesCrispin Paine

SACRED PLACES - Many National Trust properties have a deeper significance than their obvious historic ones. A large number of Trust sites have sacred roots, and the founders of the Trust were well aware of the direct ties that often exist between landscape and spirituality. The list of such places shows them to be extraordinarily diverse. The Japanese Garden at Tatton Park in Cheshire, the Nymphaeum at the Chedworth Roman Villa, and Giant's Causeway have been the source of as much inspiration through the ages as the altars at Staunton Harold, St. Mary's Studley Royal, or the chapel at Tyntesfield. At some places, mystery alone stirs the imagination: the Uffington White Horse and Cerne Giant, for example. The scenic Lake District inspired many artists, writers and musicians. Sacred Places details these National Trust properties and many others, with beautiful photography and fascinating descriptions.

WINFIELD HOUSE - Winfield House was built in 1937 by Leonard Rome Guthrie on the site of a small villa called St. Dunstan's dating from a century before. Barbara Hutton, American heiress to the Woolworth fortune, had purchased the property for its secure seclusion. She had just borne a son with husband Count Haugwitz-Reventlow and the Lindbergh baby kidnapping was still uppermost in the minds of wealthy new parents. As the war neared and her marriage ended, Hutton moved back to the States, eventually marrying film great Cary Grant. Rather than sell the house, she donated it with contents to the American government, her express wish that it be used as the U.S. embassy. In that capacity it has hosted Presidents, Kings, Queens and Prime Ministers. Maria Tuttle (wife of Ambassador Tuttle), and Marcus Binney have researched the history of the house and published this handsone volume containing many wonderful photographs from its archives.
